This missiological text provides a thorough, readable and engaging analysis of the foundational concepts of ministry and mission in the early church as presented by one of the earliest Christian historians, Luke. Luke's skill as a storyteller and teacher become evident as he weaves his ministry and mission themes and agenda throughout the text of his two-volume work--The Gosple of Luke and The Book of Acts. This very readable text is appropriate for college students, missionaries or ministers interested in a biblical perspective on mission and ministry in today's global, multicultural society.

Glenn Rogers provides a needed addition to the study of missiology in Luke-Acts with this examination of the cross-cultural and holistic mission of the first Jesus communities. Rather than ignoring or underestimating the central theme of cross-cultural interactions in the experiences of the first Christians, this volume demonstrates how Christianity was formed by the universality of Jesus’ message, and then how this message was transmitted across the cultural divides that characterized the context of the earliest Church. Under the guidance of and with the power of the Holy Spirit who is at work in mission, the holistic witness of the early Christian community is detailed. Within this discussion, Rogers examines the missiological implications of early Christian discipleship and first century table fellowship. The final chapter on the relevance of this material for today’s churches is worth the price of the book alone! I encourage this book to be read, discussed and, more in the spirit of its contents and purposes, practiced!
George F. Pickens Associate Professor of Global Ministries Messiah College

Rogers offers Christians a practical, readable book on holistic ministry and cross-cultural mission in Luke-Acts. He tracks Luke’s narrative move from the culturally particular (Jewish background) to the universal (Gentile world), utilizing a well-structured, logical thought progression.

Intelligent and scholarly, without being intimidating or obtuse, Rogers cuts to the core of key issues in missions and church growth. He provides good historical and contextual background without letting scholarly minutiae distract the reader from the main argument.

Rogers also supplies excellent summary statements in each chapter (i.e., Luke’s teaching on discipleship) which synthesize his ideas and could serve as helpful discussion points in class or small group settings.
br /> Rogers cleanly defines his subject, yet at the same time provides numerous references regarding related material for those who may wish to pursue it. His impressive bibliography is a strong blend of sources old and new, academic and practical.

I heartily recommend this thought-provoking, useful book for those involved in all aspects of evangelism, church planting, and cross-cultural ministry.
