From The Simplified New Testament Study Bible... John 1:1-5
The Word Becomes Human
1 Before anything else existed the Word had always existed. Not only was he always with God, the Word was God. 2 He was right there with God when everything was created. 3 In fact, it was the Word who actually created everything. Nothing exists that he did not create. 4 The Word was life itself and his life became a source of light for all people, 5 a light that shines brighter than all the darkness there is.
1:1-5 John introduces us to someone he calls The Word. He does not tell us who this Word is until vs. 29, where it becomes clear that he is talking about Jesus. The Word existed before anything was created. There was never a time when the Word did not exist. Not only was he right there with God through all eternity, he is God. How can he be God and also be with God? Because while there is only one God, God manifests or makes himself known in three different ways: as the Father, the Word (who became the Son), and the Holy Spirit. The Word was a different aspect or a different side of God, different from the Father or the Holy Spirit. Like a triangle has three different sides even though it is a single object, so God has three different sides, even though he is just one God. A man might be a husband, a father and a businessman. He has one role as a husband, a different role as a father and yet another role as a businessman. Yet he is only one man. So it is that the one God is God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
The meaning of word (logos in Greek) is difficult to fully understand. Perhaps the simplest way to explain logos is the expression of a thought, a thought or idea put into action. In vs.3, John says that it was the Word who actually created everything. God conceived idea of creating the universe and that part of God that is the Word put the thought or idea into action. The Word expressed the thought; he made it happen. But the Word is not separate from God's thoughts. He is God's thoughts. That is what makes him the expression of the mind of God, or to put it another way, the Word is God’s expression of himself. God is pure intellect. The Word, as one manifestation of God, is the concrete expression of pure intellect.
Not only did the Word create everything, including physical life, he is also the source of spiritual life. Humans will live forever because the Word created us as spiritual beings and, if we allow him to, he can give us spiritual life in the fullest sense of the word: eternal life with God. It is the spiritual life that comes from the Word that brings light to all people. By light John means understanding, insight into spiritual things. The Word gives spiritual life and insight, enlightenment.
